TomTom Car Kit for iPod Touch Review

When I bought the iPod Car Kit I already owned a Tomtom XL340s. I have to say that I immediately switched to using the iPod Car Kit and now I am going to sell my TomTom GPS. The reason for this is that the iPod's hardware is much better than TomTom's in several aspects. The TomTom tactile screen is not really responsive and it is hard to type on the screen keyboard (you can easily type a letter twice), this of course is not the case on the iPod. Furthermore, zoom functions are much better on the iPod as you can use the familiar two-finger pinching action to zoom in or out instead of an impractical side scroll bar on the original GPS. Also, you can listen to mp3's on the iPod while using the GPS application. I own a first generation iPod and I have the impression that it can calculate routes as fast, if not faster, than the actual GPS hardware. I am planning on updating my iPod soon for a 4th generation iPod which I believe will be many times faster (I just hope it will work with the car kit).

With respect to software, the TomTom GPS application has a few more functions than the one on the iPod but not many (I miss the possibility of editing POIs, if any).

Also, it is worth mentioning that many applications that use GPS work with the Car Kit (I have tested it with Maps, Google Earth and Navigon GPS application).

Overall I am really happy with the purchase and I really recommend this Car Kit.
