Garmin GPSMAP 62St 2.6-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

Garmin GPSMAP 62St 2.6-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

UPDATE September 7 2010. The issues resolved below are solved by release 2.50 of the 62st firmware. I have no trouble recommending this unit at this point!

I purchased the 62st recently and took it out for a 9 mile geocaching adventure. While I like the unit very much in general, it has one major problem. Like any hiking GPS, the 62st will record your track as you hike, letting you upload it to your computer when you return home. This is very useful for keeping track of your adventures. The accuracy of the 62st's GPS, combined with its barometric altimeter, lets you accurately record your track for later use.

Sadly what I discovered is that on the 62st simply pressing buttons on the GPS interferes with the barometric altimeter. Pressing even a single button on the GPS can result in spikes in the recorded data of 30 feet or more! On my first test hike, my 62st GPS said that I had climbed more than 8000 vertical feet, while the other GPSes carried by my friends on the same hike recorded only 2000.

I did apples-to-apples comparison experiments of the Garmin 62st, Garmin 60csx and Delorme PN-40, and only the 62st exhibits this bug. Pressing buttons on the other GPSes does not interfere with the recorded track data.

I have been in contact with Garmin Support about this issue, but as of today there is no fix.

Until this issue is resolved sadly I cannot recommend the Garmin 62s or 62st. I hope for a fix soon!

UPDATE as of 8/12/2010: Today Garmin released a new set of beta firmware for the 62 series GPSes. In preliminary experiments, the new firmware seems to have significantly improved things with respect to the altimeter. I will do more testing this weekend, but the situation seems to be improving! I'll report back early next week.

UPDATE as of 8/22/2010. The beta firmware has fixed the altitude issue. Some users have reported problems in updating to the beta, so I'd still suggest holding off on a purchase until Garmin releases a new "official" firmware release. I've taken the GPS out on several hikes totalling over 20 miles, and am quite impressed with it. I upgraded my review to three stars today, and will give it another star once a new firmware release is available.

UPDATE as of 9/7/2010. Garmin has now released firmware 2.50 for the 62st. If you update your unit to the new firmware level, I have no problem recommending it. My earlier problems are fixed.

Garmin GPSMAP 60C Water Resistant Hiking GPS

Garmin GPSMAP 60C Water Resistant Hiking GPS Review

This is probably my 4th handheld GPS. I also own a bluetooth GPS for the PC. I use the GARMIN in my car sometimes, but mainly on my kayak trips.
Before this I had a Magellan Sportrak color. It was stolen and replaced with this unit after I tried a friend's Garmin.
I use this GPS frequently and it is hands-down my favorite. It doesn't do the same job a GPS meant for a car does, but for the outdoors it is great.
I have downloaded maps onto it (it appears to only like Garmin maps) and everything was easy.
The display is bright and clear even in open sunlight on the water, something I could not say for the Magellan.
I highly recommend this model for hiking, biking, and kayaking.

Garmin GPSMAP 60C Water Resistant Hiking GPS Feature

  • Sunlight-readable, transreflective TFT display
  • Integrated outdoor calendar
  • Geolocation games, including geocaching mode
  • Waterproof in one meter of water for up to thirty minutes (IPX-7 standards)
  • 30-hour battery life (uses 2 AA batteries); includes serial and USB interfaces

The trip computer provides odometer, stopped time, moving average, overall average, total time, max speed, and more. Meanwhile, a fast processor allows the 60C to provide quick auto-routing, turn-by-turn directions, and audio alerts when you use the optional MapSource software, which can be stored on the unit's 56 MB of internal memory. Downloading information is quick with the USB or serial port interfaces. Using the dedicated serial port, the 60C can share navigation instructions with repeaters, plotters, and autopilots. The four-position rocker pad and dedicated high-use buttons make navigating through the unit's features easy, even when your fingers are cold or wet.

Garmin GPSMAP 60 Personal Navigation Unit

Garmin GPSMAP 60 Personal Navigation Unit Review

I bought this mostly for hiking and also for geocaching. For those uses this GPS does all you need. Sure the base map comes with only the larger highways and basically no landmarks aside from large lakes and points marking towns; but if I do a little planning ahead I don't need the map.

What I do is trace with paths, or mark with points any landmarks that are important for where I will be going in google earth. I export these to a free 3rd party software (GPS Trackmaker) that will allow me to open google earth KML files and save out a GPX file which I can then open with the included software (Mapsource) and transfer to the device. This sounds complicated but it's really a quick operation and allows me to use google earth for everything which is the point.

You can also buy maps for it if this is too much work for you. The great thing about my process though is you learn a lot about where you're going before hand from your exploration in google earth which can be invaluable.

My only complaint(why its 4 stars instead of 5) is it only supports 20 saved paths. I haven't really needed more than that yet but I'm sure at some point I will considering I'm using saved paths to mark roads, rivers, creeks, trails and other landmarks in the area I intend to visit.

Aside from the 20 paths you also get the 10,000 point "track log" which is just one very long path that it makes automatically as you travel. I enjoy this feature a lot and google earth does support loading all the paths and waypoints directly from the GPS so its not an involved process to view your recent exploits in google earth.

If you want something that doesn't require any tinkering you'd better double your price range; otherwise this is a great device.

Garmin GPSMAP 60 Personal Navigation Unit Feature

  • WAAS-Enabled, 12 Parallel-Channel GPS Receiver
  • Large, Grayscale Display With Bright, Backlit Led
  • 50 Reversible Routes, 10,000 Track Points With Tracback Technology & 1,000 Waypoints With Additional Graphical Icons For Location Identification
  • Serial & Usb Connections For Fast & Versatile Download Transfer
  • Built-In Basemap With Automatic Routing Capabilities & Turn-By-Turn Voice Prompts

Garmin GPSMAP 60 Personal Navigation Unit Overview

The GPSMAP 60 is completely waterproof, with up to 28 hours battery life using two AA batteries, this new product will target the marine and outdoor recreation markets. The GPSMAP 60 has up to 24 MB’s of internal memory for detailed maps that can be transferred to the unit using the USB interface. The Garmin GPSMap 60 packs GPS navigation into a compact, waterproof device.
The GPSMap 60 also features 24 MB of internal memory for detailed maps that you can load through a speedy USB interface, and it's fully compatible with Garmin MapSource products such as BlueChart, 24K Topo, and City Select, which provides detailed streets for turn-by-turn guidance. However, it is important to note that the GPSMap 60 does not provide voice notification.

The device offers a high-contrast, four-level grayscale LCD (160 x 240 pixels) with backlighting for the display and the keypad. A large-numbers option provides easy viewing. You get 1,000 user waypoints with name and graphic symbol and 20 reversible routes; position formats include Lat/Lon, UTM, Loran TDs, Maidenhead, MGRS, and user grid. Memory is non-volatile for permanent user data storage, requiring no memory battery.

A handy trip computer provides an odometer, stopped time, moving average, overall average, total time, max speed, and more. The unit also comes with a 10,000-point automatic track log, and 20 saved tracks (500 points each) let you retrace your path in both directions.

Other features include course and speed filtering; built-in celestial tables for best times to fish and hunt (plus sun and moon calculations); an alarm clock wake-up and stop watch; audible alarms for anchor drag, arrival, off-course, and proximity waypoint; and a geocaching navigation mode. Navigation instructions can be shared with repeaters, plotters, and autopilots using NMEA protocols through the serial port.

The GPSMap 60's rugged, fully gasketed case is waterproof to IEC 60529 IPX7 standards, meaning it's submersible in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. The device derives up to 28 hours battery life using 2 AA batteries (not included).
